ASEAN Youth Demand a Just and Community-Based Green Transition at SEA Youth Summit 2026

Published by AYF Secretariat on

JAKARTA – The SEA Youth Summit 2026, held in Jakarta, served as a powerful platform for hundreds of young leaders from across Southeast Asia to advocate for an urgent and inclusive green transition. During the summit, youth delegates emphasized that the shift toward a sustainable economy must not leave anyone behind—especially local communities and the younger generation.

The Urgency of Inclusive Green Financing A key highlight was delivered by Dedi Firmansyah, Founder of Youth Aktual, who pointed out that the greatest barrier to achieving a green economy in the region is access to funding. He noted that green transition initiatives often focus on large corporations, while grassroots community-based projects frequently struggle to secure adequate financial support.

“We need green financing models that are more transparent and truly side with local communities. Without inclusive financial support, the green transition will remain a mere slogan without justice for those most affected,” Dedi stated during a panel discussion.

A Collective Commitment from ASEAN Youth Beyond financing, the summit produced a collective call to action from hundreds of delegates, demanding bolder climate policies from ASEAN governments. The primary focus areas included:

  • Just Transition: Ensuring that the shift to renewable energy does not sacrifice the rights of workers or indigenous peoples.
  • Community Empowerment: Encouraging renewable energy projects and natural resource management led directly by local residents.
  • Regional Collaboration: Strengthening youth networks across borders to share innovations and practical solutions for the climate crisis.

The summit concluded with a joint commitment to bring these youth recommendations to high-level ASEAN negotiations, ensuring that the voice of the future generation serves as a primary compass for green development policies in the region.
