AYF Launches ASEAN Green Youth Hub Initiative in Indonesia

Since July 2024, AYF’s CODP (Community Outreach & Development Program) Division has been reaching out to and engaging with youth across Indonesia to identify potential candidates for AYF’s latest initiative: the creation of the ASEAN Green Youth Hub. It is an initiative that is supported by the European Union. This hub aims to build a network of young people aged 18-35 who are passionate about environmental issues, with a particular focus on promoting a just and inclusive green transition in Indonesia, and eventually expanding to include youth from other Southeast Asian countries. After a series of personal engagements through online call with youth across Indonesia and in-person meeting with youth in Yogyakarta, the selected youths were invited to attend the first event: the First Open Space of the ASEAN Green Youth Hub, held on 26 October 2024.

Event Highlights: Empowering Youth for Green Action

The online event was a dynamic and productive gathering, featuring an icebreaker session to foster connections among participants. The highlight of the event was a keynote speech by Puspa Dewy, a prominent feminist activist involved with organizations such as Solidaritas Perempuan and WALHI. Puspa Dewy shared her expertise on the Green Transition, discussing the current environmental challenges in Indonesia and how youth can contribute to a more just and sustainable future.

After the presentation, participants were divided into breakout rooms to engage in discussions about the Green Transition. They explored actionable steps they could take to address climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability within their communities.
